Michael Owen has defended Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez after many questioned the Uruguayan’s ability following his slow start at Anfield.
The former Benfica player scored twice and recorded an assist in his first two competitive outings, but was then sent off on his home debut for a header on Crystal Palace’s Joachim Andersen.
However, the 23-year-old now has two goals from his last two appearances and is showing signs of establishing himself at his new club, prompting the former Rojo to explain that the striker has done nothing wrong since arriving on Merseyside.
“A lot of people write it off or say: ‘Ooh, I’m not sure about the new Liverpool signing,’” Owen told BT Sport (via Metro).
“I don’t think he’s done anything wrong for Liverpool so far, he scored against Arsenal, he played well against Rangers, lots of chances.
“We talk about the weather, [Roberto] Firmino had more than enough, coldness in front of goal. He scored against Arsenal, we know everything about him, just a touch of class.”

We understand that the Uruguayan international hasn’t started out in the red shirt, but it’s important to remember that the attacker is adjusting to a new club in a new league while learning to speak English and communicate with the rest of his team.
To be fair to Nunez, he is averaging a goal contribution every two games and took his goals very well at the Emirates and Ibrox last night.
Jurgen Klopp clearly felt the £64m spent on the striker earlier this year paid off and we think it’s only a matter of time before we see him firing on all cylinders.
He’ll be hungry for more minutes when we host Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday, where Premier League top scorer Erling Haaland will be in action.
The Norwegian has already scored 15 league goals this season and keeping him calm will be a difficult task at the weekend.
Let’s hope for a great performance from the lads to really set the scoreboard and kick-start our league campaign.
