Premier League clubs struggle, find wins in Europa League

Both Premier League clubs in the Europa League won on Thursday, 1-0. However, despite the three points, both teams needed more effort than expected.

Manchester United needed a 93rd-minute goal to beat visiting Omonoia Nicosia at Old Trafford. Scott McTominay, a second-half substitute, scored from close range to relieve the crowd that night.

The narrow win keeps the club’s hopes of finishing top of Group E in the Europa League alive. Still, United remain three points behind Real Sociedad with two group games remaining. The two teams meet on the last day of the stage.

Although United won the game, Omonoia goalkeeper Francis Uzoho was undoubtedly the . The Nigerian international faced a staggering 32 shots from United players. He made 12 saves on the night, including some brilliant saves during the 90 minutes. A great double stop within the first two minutes of the second half was certainly a highlight.

Arsenal also struggled to find their normal form in Norway. The unusually slippery artificial turf surely caused the Gunners some problems. Arsenal, however, managed to pull off an away win against Bodo/Glimt. Bukayo Saka scored the only goal of the match midway through the first half.

The reigning Norwegian champions put up a good fight on the night, particularly in the second half. While Arsenal certainly entered the match as favourites, Bodo/Glimt have proven to be a difficult place to visit. In fact, the Eliteserien team went into Thursday’s game with the longest home winning streak on the continent. Glimt had racked up 14 straight home wins during European play.

USMNT goalkeeper Matt Turner had a positive performance against the Norwegian club. Turner not only kept a clean sheet, but also made an excellent diving save in the second half to keep Glimt off the scoreboard. According to player ratings website FotMob, Turner actually had the highest rating of any player on the field.

Arsenal can secure qualification for the Europa League round of 16 with a victory against PSV next Thursday.
