Exclusive: Chelsea edging closer to bringing in Southampton man with an agreement “really close”

Chelsea are inching closer to bringing in Joe Shields from Southampton in the position of Director of Recruitment.

Shields only joined Southampton earlier this year after leaving his Manchester City role. Since joining the South Coast club, Shields has brought in multiple young stars for the future, including Romeo Lavia and Armel Bella-Kotchap.

However, he could already be walking out the door, with Fabrizio Romano confirming to CaughtOffside via his Substack column that a deal between Chelsea and Shields is getting closer to completion.

“The deal between Joe Shields and Chelsea is really tight. However, it may still take some time for an announcement to happen. It’s not imminent yet,” Romano said.

Bringing in a man of Shields’ caliber would be a smart move for Chelsea. The work he has already done at Southampton and the previous work he has done at Manchester City shows how skilled he is in his field.

Since Todd Boehly took charge of Chelsea, the American businessman has sought to completely revamp the club from top to bottom. Not just bringing in new players or a new manager, but completely overhauling the staff behind the scenes. Whether it was a smart move by Boehly remains to be seen, but results on the field certainly seem to be improving.
