NWSL terminates contracts of two Orlando Pride coaches

The National Women’s Soccer League has terminated the contracts of two coaches at Orlando Pride. Former head coach Amanda Cromwell and assistant Sam Greene are now out of work. This follows a lengthy investigation into misconduct within the team.

An official statement about the ordeal stated that the duo cannot work for the league in the future unless approved by the Commissioner. “Cromwell and Greene’s employment contracts are terminated effective immediately,” the statement read. “Cromwell and Greene are not eligible to work with the NWSL in any capacity unless or until approved by the Commissioner.”

“To be eligible for future NWSL employment, Cromwell and Greene must participate in mandatory retaliation, discrimination, harassment and bullying training, and must participate in mandatory executive training, as determined by the Commissioner and at the League’s expense.”

NWSL fires two Orlando Pride coaches

Cromwell took to Twitter to express his feelings about the firing. “I am saddened and disappointed by the results of the NWSL investigation released today,” Cromwell said. “I think the investigation lacked transparency, professionalism and thoroughness. As a result, my character and integrity have been mischaracterized.”

The coach also hinted that she will explore legal options on the ruling.

Both Cromwell and Greene had been on temporary administrative leave since June while the investigation took place. Accusations of verbal abuse and favoritism first came to the eyes of the league in the spring. Two months later, reports showed that two coaches engaged in retaliatory behavior towards certain players.

A thorough investigation determined that these allegations were true. Both Cromwell and Greene reportedly took negative action towards players who they believed made the accusations or supported them. Coaches even went so far as to try to trade or release these players.

Additionally, the NWSL and Orlando Pride have placed goalkeeping coach Aline Reis on unpaid administrative leave. According to the report, Reis failed to properly cooperate with the investigation. Reis cannot return to her job until she attends mandatory training on the subject.
