Manchester United are preparing a move for Odysseas Vlachodimos.
This is stated by Media Foot, which states that the Red Devils are looking at the Benfica goalkeeper as David de Gea’s successor.
The Spaniard’s current contract is set to expire at the end of the season, forcing United to look at other options.
While the club has the option to extend De Gea’s contract for a further 12 months, they have not yet triggered that clause.
Questions about the suitability of the current number one for Erik ten Hag’s system and the possibility of a decline in performance levels have also contributed to the Spanish goalkeeper’s delicate situation at Old Trafford.
Vlachodimos is in top form and could provide a good solution to what is looking increasingly like a problematic position for Ten Hag.
The Greek recently put in a spectacular performance to help his team draw against Paris Saint-Germain.
He has been nicknamed ‘El Cerbero’ by Benfica fans, such has been his ability to protect the net.
At 28 years old, Vlachodimos has a first-rate experience.
He has assumed the mantle of Greece’s number one while competing for trophies in Portugal and putting in performances of the highest quality in the UEFA Champions League for the last four years.
Vlachodimos is perhaps more of a ‘traditional’ goalkeeper than some of the other candidates who have been discussed, but with just 20 months remaining on his contract he could provide a low-cost alternative as United continue their rebuild.
If Man United choose to sign Vlachodimos, they will need to fend off competition from a rival Premier League club.
Leicester City were unable to replace Kasper Schmeichel during the summer and are also interested in Benfica’s shot stopper.
