Tammy Abraham Refuses to Rule Out Future Chelsea Return

AS Roma striker Tammy Abraham has refused to rule out a possible future return to his former club Chelsea.

Abraham, who graduated from Chelsea’s academy, left the Premier League side in 2021 after falling down the pecking order at the Blues under then-manager Thomas Tuchel.

The 25-year-old joined Serie A side AS Roma in August 2021 and signed a five-year deal with the Italian outfit. And the English striker enjoyed a great debut season at Roma, racking up 27 goals in all competitions. He scored 17 of those in Serie A, where he made 37 appearances.

Chelsea are reported to have included a buyback clause of around €80m in Abraham’s Roma contract, which can only be triggered after the striker completes two seasons at the Serie A side.

Abraham is now in his second season with Roma and has so far appeared in 10 games in all competitions for the Italians in the current season. He has also scored two goals so far in the 22/23 campaign.

Asked if he would be interested in returning to Chelsea, Abraham insisted he is happy at Roma but refused to rule out a move to the Stamford Bridge outfit.

“My approach is to do exactly what I did last year here,” Abraham told Ojora Babatunde. “I’m happy here, the team is good, the coach is good, the city, the fans… I’m happy. But you never know the future. Only God knows the future.“

It remains to be seen whether Chelsea will be interested in activating the buy-back clause in Abraham’s Roma contract, especially since they parted ways with Tuchel.

The Blues have also beefed up their attacking department in the summer transfer window. They got Raheem Sterling from Premier League rivals Manchester City. Chelsea also acquired the services of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who signed from FC Barcelona.

Meanwhile, Chelsea have also been linked with several player moves in the coming summer. Reports recently surfaced that Chelsea carried out an initial medical on RB Leipzig attacker Christopher Nkunku last summer.

Chelsea are also reportedly willing to pay more than Nkunku’s release clause as they aim to sign the highly rated French attacker.

Another player linked with a move to Chelsea is Rafael Leao from AC Milan. The Blues had made an informal approach to Milan for Leao last summer. But Milan rejected his advances.

Meanwhile, Chelsea take on Wolverhampton Wanders at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League in their next game.
