Nunes then joined LigaPro side Estoril and played mainly for their reserve team. In 2019, Nunes signed for Portuguese giants Sporting CP. With Sporting, he finally got his breakthrough and played in the Primeira Liga.

In his short career at Sporting CP, the midfielder won one Primeira Liga title and two Tacas da Liga titles. His consistency made him one of the top prospects in the world. Many big teams were after him, but Nunes decided to join EPL club Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer of 2022 for a fee of €45m.

Within days of joining Wolves, Nunes established himself as a starter. Despite Wolves being down, the Portuguese midfielder has been doing well so far.

And now, a report from the Sunday Mirror suggests defending English top flight champions Manchester City are interested in signing Portuguese international Matheus Nunes from Wolves.

City currently have one of the best teams in the world. They have depth in each and every position. But as Pep Guardiola himself believes, change is the key to his continued success.

Throughout the summer, no one was sure if City’s Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva would stick around. Silva stayed but it is a known fact that the midfielder wants to move to Spain and could join Barcelona next season.

Then there is the club captain Ilkay Gundogan. The German midfielder is in the last year of his contract. And at the moment there is no confirmation of whether he will stay at the Etihad beyond this season or not.

So City are currently looking for a number of midfielders. And Mathus Nunes is at the top of his list.

Meanwhile, one of City’s closest rivals, Liverpool, have also had a keen interest in the midfielder for a long time. Thus, the City will have to fight against the Reds for the signing of Nunes.

As well as Nunes, both EPL giants are also interested in England international Jude Bellingham and are chasing the Dortmund midfielder. Two other EPL teams, Chelsea and Manchester United, and reigning UCL champions Real Madrid are also in the running for the talented youngster.
