Liverpool could hijack Chelsea move for £52.7m attacker as RMC Sport reports Reds following him ‘very closely’

Christopher Nkunku’s potential move to Chelsea next summer may not be as smooth as some have assumed following an update on the Frenchman’s future.

Liverpool are said to remain in the mix for the talented attacker and the club are reported to be watching the player “very closely”.

“French striker Christopher Nkunku has reached an agreement in principle with Chelsea for a transfer next summer,” Fabrice Hawkins reported for RMC Sport.

“The Leipzig player passed the medical examination, but not in Frankfurt as the German press announced. The player was fine in Frankfurt, but to renew his insurance (because of his legs, as many footballers do).

Chelsea are willing to lift the €60m buyout clause, but no deal has been reached between the English club and Christopher Nkunku so far. Several clubs, including Liverpool, follow the French international very closely.

The 24-year-old has enjoyed a strong start to his Bundesliga campaign, registering seven goal contributions in 11 games (in all competitions).

Nkunku, Liverpool
Liverpool’s priority is still believed to be strengthening the midfield, although Nkunku is one of several names linked with the Reds.

The question for Liverpool, of course, remains where they would place Nkunku in their forward three after spending more than £60m on Darwin Nunez in the summer and owning another top centre-forward in Diogo Jota.

He has played in the attacking line this term and in recent years, although the reality that the striker is more focused in the center is not questioned.

It’s entirely possible our recruiting team could see some advantage playing the French international, particularly with Mo Salah entering 30, though it remains to be seen whether we’re prepared to invest the £52.7m required to get him signed. .

Liverpool’s big problem may already have been resolved after Merson noted the international break advantage.
