The final break before the World Cup is finally over, with the Reds now just days away from a late return to action at home to Brighton.
It’s been a busy period for Liverpool’s internationals, and when Tuesday turned to Wednesday, a total of 11 players took part with a further six watching from the bench.
In the early morning, Colombia faced Mexico in their second friendly in the United States, losing 2-0 before half an hour at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.
But a triple change at the break, with Luis Sinisterra among those removed and veterans Radamel Falcao and James RodrÃguez among those removed, led to the comeback.
Diaz’s ambitious wide play down the left was a key feature, as Sinisterra scored twice and Wilmar Barrios scored another in Colombia’s 3-2 triumph.
The 25-year-old was taken out in the final stages in California, before a long flight back to Liverpool.
Alisson, Fabinho and Roberto Firmino, who were spared a transatlantic trip of their own, were part of Brazil’s squad for the friendly against Tunisia in Paris.
Alisson was the only one to take part, making his second successive half-time appearance in a 5-1 win, with Fabinho and Firmino sitting out.
Elsewhere in Europe, Luis Suarez set up Darwin Nunez for a much-needed goal, the striker heading the second in Uruguay’s 2-0 friendly victory over Canada in Slovakia.
Nunez played 60 minutes up front and can regain confidence with him when he returns to Merseyside.
In the UEFA Nations League, there was another clash between Kostas Tsimikas’s Greece and Conor Bradley’s Northern Ireland, with the two full-backs meeting from the start.
It was Tsimikas who prevailed, with Greece winning 3-1 in a game in which Bradley denied a huge chance for his club-mate with a gutsy block.
Diogo Jota looked to follow up his goal against the Czech Republic with a start for Portugal against Spain, but was unable to score another as his country fell to a late 1-0 loss.
England under-21s met Germany in a friendly in Sheffield, with Harvey Elliott starting and playing 70 minutes in a 3-1 win while Tyler Morton remained on the bench.
James Balagizi scored 75 minutes as England U-20s beat Australia 3-0, without Harvey Davies, while Sepp van den Berg helped keep a clean sheet in a 90-minute display as the Netherlands U-21s drew 0-0 with Romania. .
Owen Beck made only his second start of the season for club and country as the Wales under-21s lost 2-0 to Austria, scoring 82 minutes, while Melkamu Frauendorf played 75 minutes as the Germany under-19s beat Slovakia. 1-0.
