Emmett Brennan targets brief amateur return

Emmett Brennan is poised to get the vest back from the draw and could pull off an upset if he briefly returns to the amateur game.

The popular Dub, whose unlikely Olympic journey captured the nation’s attention, revealed his career ambitions and declared himself a professional wrestler earlier this year.

The Docklands graduate had spent time in New York training with John Duddy and alongside Feargal McCrory and declared his interest in fighting on the Taylor-Serrano undercard.

However, he has yet to make his debut, in fact, he has not fought since leaving the Tokyo Games in the gloves of Dilshodbek Ruzmetov last summer.

A shoulder injury threatened to end Dub’s professional career before it began and he has been through a “horrible” time since Tokyo.

The 31-year-old is fit again and believes he will soon be ready to fight. In fact, he is aiming to return in January and it is possible that he will return at the next installment of the Elite National Championships.

Speaking online, he said: “After what has been a horrible 18 months with a shoulder injury, it looks like I am back in the boxing ring. First session of a few long months ahead to return to 100%. Still a long way to go, but I’m very happy to do a few rounds this morning relatively pain free. Elite champion 2023 then to pros sounds like a good plan to me. I have been working tirelessly for the last 6 months to get to this stage and I wouldn’t be where I am if it wasn’t for Tommy at the Pain and Performance Clinic. .”

The Elites will play Jan. 6-14 and could provide Brennan with an opportunity to showcase his fitness and remind professional managers and promoters of what he brings to the table in the form of talent, personality and support.
