Undefeated Super Welterweight Mary Spencer Knocking on the Door of Title Shot

NEW YORK – Unbeaten Canadian junior middleweight Mary Spencer (7-0, 5 KOs) is on the fast track for a world title.

Since turning pro 13 months ago under the Eye of the Tiger promotional banner, Spencer has already fought 7 times and more activity is anticipated later in the year. In this time, she has quickly established herself as one of the top punchers in all of women’s boxing with 5 first-round knockouts, including knockouts of former IBF super welterweight world champion Chris Namus and world contender IBF super welterweight Cynthia Lozano in her last two bouts. Lozcano’s knockout earned Mary the WBC Silver and WBA international titles.

“My coach, Ian Mackillop, has been telling me that I hit hard. It’s not something I can prove to myself, so I decided to believe him and adjusted my fighting style accordingly. When my opponents go down early in fights, I’m just as surprised as everyone else. I’m excited to see how far this goes and I’m getting there for everyone!” Spencer said.

Spencer’s rapid rise through the pro ranks may not come as a surprise to anyone who has followed her run as perhaps the most hyped female amateur boxer in Canadian history with a 118-9 overall record. As a member of Team Canada, Spencer won 3 gold medals at the World Amateur Games (2005, 2008, 2010), a gold medal at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, and represented the country at the London Olympics in 2012. Spencer’s combination of incredible amateur pedigree, superb boxing ability and increasingly unleashed power in both hands will make her a tough matchup with any fighter in the super welterweight division.

“Mary is the dark horse of this division,” says manager Brian Cohen, who has added 40th and 41st titles to his list of accolades in women’s boxing. “Eye of the Tiger is an incredible promotion. Believing in Maria as much as they do is a blessing from a management perspective. When the fighter, the manager and the promotion are in sync, the sky is the limit.

Spencer, a member of the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation, recently showcased his versatility as a color commentator on ESPN+’s telecast of the Eye of the Tiger Arslanbek Makhmudov vs. Carlos Takam undercard on September 16.

Spencer is managed by Brian Cohen and David McWater of Split-T Management, marking the first major collaboration between Split-T and Montreal’s famed Eye of the Tiger promotions.
