Sunday round-up: North London derby victory breaks records

A quick summary of Sunday for you.

Firstly, what a performance and what a result for Arsenal Women yesterday, beating the Sp*rs 4-0 at the Emirates in front of a record-breaking crowd. The goals came from Beth Mead, Vivianne Miedema (2) and a header from Rafaelle. Aside from the obvious fun of beating the old foe, it’s a nice boost ahead of the European clash with Ajax on Wednesday.

Regarding the support and a record 53,737 tickets sold, Jonas Eidevall said afterwards:

The game is the best publicity there can be for the people who come. That’s what it’s about. That people come here and feel proud of the team and the players and want to support. We really feel that with the fans here today. We really hope that many of them will come back and bring a friend and then sell out.

It’s great to see those levels of support, the enthusiasm the players must have had in dispatching the opposition in front of them must have been fantastic, and let’s hope there’s a lot more of this to come.

Meanwhile, Ghana have confirmed that Thomas Partey has returned to London after missing the game against Brazil with a knee problem. It was initially reported that it was as a precaution and that he would probably play his friendly against Nicaragua, but it requires “further evaluation” and as I said yesterday that will be a real concern with the derby next weekend and the October schedule as full as full it can be.

Also ‘cautionary’ was the substitution of Kieran Tierney during Scotland’s win over Ireland last night. He went out in the first half after hitting his head, but manager Steve Clarke said afterward that he was “fine.” Whether he plays Ukraine on Tuesday, Scotland’s third game in 6 days, remains to be seen, but like Partey, this is another one you can’t help but be a little worried about. Hopefully this isn’t a repeat of a previous injury or anything, so fingers crossed.

Martin Odegaard played 71 minutes of Norway’s loss to Slovenia last night, while Granit Xhaka played all 90 minutes as Switzerland beat Spain 2-1.

Right, I’m out late and I need a lot more coffee and possibly some bacon between some pieces of bread. Have a good one, and just in terms of podcast stuff, James and I will be recording the Arsecast Extra for you tomorrow afternoon.

Have a good.
