Messi claims he had trouble finding himself at PSG

Superstar Lionel Messi claims he endured a tough freshman season with PSG last year. The former Barcelona champion left sunny Spain for Paris last summer. Despite winning the Ligue 1 title with his new club and collecting 14 assists in league games, the forward had one of the lowest goal totals of his illustrious career.

In fact, Messi scored just six goals in total in Ligue 1 during the 2021/22 campaign. It was his lowest total of league goals since the 2004/05 season with Barça. The Argentine international, however, only made 17 LaLiga appearances during that particular campaign.

However, Messi now appears to be back to the normal dominant player of his past. “I feel good,” Messi said after Argentina’s victory over Honduras on Friday night. “It’s different than last year and I knew it was going to be that way.”

“Last year, as I said, I had a bad time,” he continued. “I never finished finding myself and this time it is different. I arrived with a different mentality, more adapted to the club, the locker room, the game, my teammates. The truth is that I feel very well, and I am enjoying myself again”.

The 35-year-old star certainly seems to be back on track. Messi has already scored four goals and added seven assists in just eight Ligue 1 games for PSG so far this season. He currently leads the French league in assists, successful dribbling, total shots and is eighth in goals scored.

Argentine coach Lionel Scaloni has also noticed the difference with his player. “I think PSG have found a way to play that understands him and I think he has taken a step forward in his team,” Scaloni said before the Honduras match. “We are very happy with how things are currently going.”

Messi will be looking to bring his elusive Champions League trophy to PSG this season.
