The Liverpool Legends faced Man United once again on Saturday, with Mark Gonzalez and Florent Sinama-Pongolle both on the scoresheet in a 2-1 victory, filled with many memorable moments.
Four months after a dominant 3-1 victory at Old Trafford, the Liverpool Legends reunited, this time at Anfield for the second leg of the ‘Northern Legends’ clash.
Sir Kenny Dalglish, Ian Rush and John Aldridge formed the Reds management team for the occasion, which saw the return of Xabi Alonso.
The Spanish maestro is no stranger to these charity matches and had several generations reliving the memories he doled out throughout the 2000s.
That touch and vision, he still has, not that we’re surprised!
Following a 3-1 victory in the first leg, Liverpool secured victory with a 2-1, 5-2 win on aggregate, thanks to goals from González and Sinama-Pongolle.
Dimitar Berbatov opened the scoring, however, the curse of the first goal is clearly not limited to just Jurgen Klopp’s side…
Gonzalez then added to his Old Trafford brace with a second-half goal that put Liverpool back on equal terms against the Kop…the smile said it all.
Sinama-Pongolle was next on the scoreboard with an orderly finish from inside the area, and his joy was contagious after the fact. He even dished out some Klopp-style fist bombs!
The occasion marked an opportunity to dust off the boots, which included those of Bjorn Tore Kvarme…
Andriy Voronin also wore red again…
And Martin Skrtel was present, and with a full head of hair!
While Robbie Keane was included in a roster of legends for the first time…
Meanwhile, Roy Keane’s presence at Man United was heard before he was seen as Anfield greeted him with a chorus of boos. He was quite happy with it, as you can see…
The match is always fun, with moments of humor mixed with skill and nostalgia, and all for an important cause!
These were your triumphant Liverpool Legends on the day…
