Haney on Tank: He’s Not Making Five Times More Than Me; That’s Cap

Devin Haney wants to make it very clear that he and Gervonta “Tank” Davis are in a similar tax bracket.

The undisputed lightweight champion from Oakland, California recently had a social media dispute with Davis from Baltimore regarding their wallets. One exchange saw Davis, a popular draw, claim that he was being paid “five times” more than Haney for his fights, essentially suggesting that his draw power outweighs the importance of Haney’s belts.

“[Three Cry-laughing emojis] Why am I getting paid 5 times more than you like? I have all the belts.” Davis tweeted. “But boom ass N—– and another thing stop trying to be silly me… people are starting to notice…”

In a recent interview, Haney took issue with Davis’s claim, saying the puncher was essentially lying.

“That’s crazy,” Haney told FightHype.com. “What are you saying, he is making $25 million per fight? Everybody knows that’s the cap. If I was making 25 million a fight, it would show.”

Haney noted that materially, he has “everything” Davis has.

“He hasn’t gotten any better than me. Everything he has, I have. Nobody believes that anyway. That was just an excuse to stop people from saying, ‘Why don’t you fight him?’ He wanted to follow his money route.”

In fact, Haney suggested that he doesn’t even think Davis, who has wrestled strictly on the pay-per-view platform for the past two years, will win more than him.

“We all know the truth,” Haney said. “He is not sure about winning five times more than me. He is not even earning more than me.”

Haney is set to defend all four of his lightweight titles against George Kambosos in their rematch on Oct. 15 (ESPN) at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia. Haney defeated Kambosos by unanimous decision in their first meeting earlier this summer.

“My main focus is George Kambosos,” Haney said. “Once we get the win, we can talk about what’s next.”
