Billy Joe Saunders Back in Serious Training, Plots Return To The Ring

Former two-division world champion Billy Joe Saunders has returned to training to shed much of the weight he gained during his extended layoff.

Saunders has been out of the ring since May 2021, when he suffered the first loss of his professional career: a stoppage loss to Mexican superstar Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez.

The super middleweight unification clash was halted after Saunders suffered a fractured orbital bone.

At one point it looked like Saunders might retire from the sport, but now he’s planning a return to the ring.

The planned return could take place in late 2022 or early 2023.

“Enjoyed a bit of time off and had a good year. I’m getting a bit bored and my fists are itchy, so I decided to do a little training shifting some wood and see where the road takes me.” Life is fine, I went to my doctor for my checkups and I was happy,” Saunders told Matchroom Boxing.

“The first thing is obviously your health. There’s no point in boxing, whatever it is you’re boxing, whether it’s millions or just a pound to come back if that’s not under control, and if I decide, which it looks like I will, to come back. “. back then I can. It’s good to enjoy a little bit of training, and it’s good to have a clear head and see where I want to go instead of having defenses and stuff and go where other people want me to go.

“I think this year is definitely marketable for me. I’m in the gym now going twice a day and I’m losing weight and getting fitter every day. It could be [ready to fight] at the end of the year or it could be the beginning of next year, but we will know soon. It all depends on which opponent is available.”
