Ellerbe & Hearn Trade Trash Talk Over Canelo – Golovkin II Pay-per-view Numbers

By Dan Ambrose: Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe and Eddie Hearn spoke on social media today about the pay-per-view numbers for last weekend’s trilogy fight between Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin.

Ellerbe gloated a bit after industry insider Dan Rafael reported that the Canelo vs. Golovkin III generated between 550,000 and 575,000 purchases on DAZN PPV.

According to Rafael, those numbers are “disappointing” and he doubts they will cover the $75 million in purses paid to Canelo (58-2-2, 39 KOs) and Golovkin (42-2-1, 37 KOs). to headline him this past Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

DAZN reported that the total buy rate was 1.06 million buys for the Canelo-Golovkin III fight. However, Rafael says those were global numbers and not for the United States, which charges more for its pay-per-view than other countries.

DAZN has not yet reported the total revenue earned from the Canelo vs. fight. Golovkin III. That would clear up a lot of things if they revealed it to the public because it would shed light on whether the purchases will cover the $75 million in purses for Canelo and Golovkin.

If the pay-per-view numbers don’t balance out to cover the costs of Canelo and Golovkin’s huge bags, it’s unclear what DAZN will be trying to prove by reporting the event generated 1.06 million buys.

It was a bad idea to do the Canelo vs. fight. Golovkin at this point in their careers because there isn’t much interest in the fight anymore. Golovkin has taken a toll on him by choosing to take on non-elite fighters over the last four years, and the fans have forgotten about him.

Janibek [Alimkhanuly] either [Yamaguchi] Falcão, the Brazilian we promote,” Top Rank’s Bob Arum told Fighthype when asked who Gennadiy Golovkin should fight after his loss to Canelo Alvarez last Saturday.

“I mean, those fights are easy fights to make, and they’re winnable fights for GGG, but they’re not affordable because he, it’s not his fault, he’s coming off a deal where I think he made $30 in his last fight. A million dollars. No one is going to pay him something like that to fight one of those guys,” Arum said of Golovkin.
