Canelo vs GGG 3 PPV numbers released after “bombed” reports

As reports of disappointing sales surface, DAZN responded by posting Canelo vs. GGG 3 Pay Per View numbers.

Last Saturday, Canelo Alvarez dominated and finally outpointed Gennadiy Golovkin to end their argument once and for all.

In the process, the Mexican superstar defended his WBC, WBA, WBO and IBF belts at T-Mobile Arena.

Canelo’s win in Las Vegas ended one of the closest rivalries in sports. The first two matches were competitive. However, the third one was nowhere near the standard of the September 2017 and 2018 versions.

Defending his undisputed super middleweight titles, Canelo announced his return following a devastating loss to WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol last May.

Golovkin, on the other hand, refused to retire despite looking every day of his forty years.

What are the PPV numbers for Canelo vs GGG 3?

With the dust settled, rumors began to circulate that the trilogy fight blitzed and won far less than needed to break even.

A combined portfolio payout of $65 million left DAZN PPV needing a massive increase in sales to break even.

Releasing a statement to World Boxing News, DAZN said: “DAZN Group has confirmed that the fight night of Canelo vs. GGG III had a global audience of millions.

“More than 1.06 million purchases generated worldwide, including PPV and DAZN subscriptions,” they stated.

PPV sales in the United States

The key word there was “global” as it is a well known fact that the US market only counts purchases in its country by right.

Therefore, DAZN is able to make the fight look like a considerable success despite a spectacular price tag of $84.95 US.

In other regions such as the UK, Canelo vs GGG 3 can be purchased for as little as $13 if you have a subscription of around $9 per month.

Looking at things from that point of view, anything less than 750,000 sales in the US certainly won’t cut it.

DAZN continued: “The event, in association with Matchroom Boxing, Canelo Promotions and GGG Promotions, marks DAZN’s biggest fight yet in 2022.

“That is both globally and in the United States. It also claims the title of the third largest boxing event globally on DAZN since its inception.

event number two

“Canelo vs GGG 3 is also the second biggest boxing event in the United States since it launched in 2018.

“In addition, DAZN was once again the most downloaded sports app in the world. In addition to being the highest grossing application of any category in the United States, “they added.

All of those stats don’t hide the fact that Canelo vs. GGG 3 needed over a million sales in the United States alone to make a significant profit from its design.

Nonetheless, DAZN seems happy that the fight has been sold outside of the US and away from the much more lucrative market of individual home purchases.

“DAZN saw tremendous growth in its business partners, including +71% across bars, restaurants, casinos and theaters compared to Canelo’s last fight against Dmitry Bivol in May.

“This included fans from across the country coming together to watch live in over 680 theaters in the United States alone.

“Records for social media engagement were also set. This includes TikTok fight night content, which was the highest performing of all DAZN boxing events with 7.9 million views.”

pay per event card

The Pay Per View live stream undercard saw Jesse Rodriguez defeat Israel Gonzalez. Ali Akhmedov defeated Gabriel Rosado.

Austin Williams fended off tough Brit Kieron Conway as the American remained undefeated over ten rounds. In the end, Williams made a unanimous decision.

The talented Marc Castro recorded his sixth knockout in eight wins with an impressive knockout of Kevin Montiel Mendoza.

Aaron Aponte and Fernando Molina remained undefeated after fighting to an eight-round split draw.

Aponte is now 6-0-1. Molina is 8-0-1.

Super middleweight Diego Pacheco got to 16-0 with a fifth-round knockout of Enrique Collazo just before the Pay Per View began.

Anthony Herrera kicked off the action in the opener with a five-round technical decision victory over Delvin McKinley.

Calendar

Other major upcoming events on the DAZN world boxing calendar include ‘Born Rivals’ Eubank Jr. vs. Ben on October 8.

Katie Taylor returns to the ring on October 29 and Bivol vs. Ramirez occurs on November 5.

Judge for yourself if any of them can match the success of Canelo vs GGG 3, if you can call it a success.
