Staveley now wants £55m speedster as first signing in January

Newcastle United’s summer window was a positive one, but saw them lose their main target.

That was, of course, Bayer Leverkusen’s Moussa Diaby, whom the Magpies hounded throughout the summer but were unable to agree a fee with the Bundesliga club because the two clubs were too far apart in their valuations of the French star.

Leverkusen were reportedly demanding £55m for the winger as they were in no rush to offload a player whose contract expires in the summer of 2025.

Arsenal were also looking to tempt Diaby to the Emirates Stadium in their search for a new winger, but ran into the same problems as Newcastle.

In the end, both clubs did not address their issues regarding the wide position and could now pursue Diaby again during one of the next two windows. Newcastle spent big during the last window of January and they may be able to do so again this time.

Journalist Dean Jones has been speaking about Newcastle’s search for Diaby and has said that the legwork done by the Magpies over the summer will leave them confident of winning the race.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “There will definitely be competition for Diaby, she’s brilliant. However, Newcastle have already worked hard, so they will hope that if they want to pick up that transfer, they will be ahead of everyone else.”

Time will only tell if Newcastle get their man, but they will certainly have to stick their hands in their pockets for that to happen.
