Canelo Alvarez says he could be out as long as year because of injury

We may have seen the last of Canelo Alvarez for a while.

The super middleweight champion said he aggravated a left wrist injury in his unanimous decision victory over Gennadiy Golovkin on Saturday in Las Vegas.

The injury, which he said originated during his win over Caleb Plant last November, could sideline him for up to a year.

“It hurts everywhere,” he said of his wrist at the post-fight news conference. “I’ve had these issues since the Caleb Plant fight, so I was like, ‘Okay, later, later.’ and then i started [to feel] Very bad, I need surgery. It was very bad, very bad.

“It’s not torn, it’s a meniscus, it’s a wrist injury, it’s not torn. They’re ligaments, like a knee injury or something. … I’m going to take the time my body needs. Last year I fought four times in 11 months, that’s why.

“But I need to take a little time, maybe May, September. I need to take my time.

Álvarez (58-2-2, 39 KOs) defeated Golovkin (42-2-1, 27 KOs) by scores of 116-112, 115-113 and 115-113 to retain his undisputed championship.

The Mexican star said he would seek a rematch with Dmitry Bivol if the Russian defeats Gilberto Ramirez in November. Bivol surprised Álvarez last May.
