Beat AJ, Dychko, Yoka, Savon as amateur, KO’d in 84 secs as pro

You would have been forgiven for thinking that amateur heavyweight Mahammadrasul Majidov had all the pedigree in the world to make it big.

He is six-foot-three and has wins over Anthony Joshua, Tony Yoka, Ivan Dychko, Erislandy Savon and many others.

amateur star

A three-time amateur world champion, he turned pro late in the game at age 32. The Dagestan puncher was quickly caught by Eddie Hearn when he did.

However, the warning sounds went off almost immediately.

In a debut that almost turned into a nightmare, Majidov was eliminated by Ed Fountain. He recovered to record a fourth-round stoppage.

Majidov’s follow-up against Tom Little was much smoother and it was a routine second session victory for the Baku-based boxer.

Signing his professional contract, Majidov was eager to impress. At the same time, Hearn was thrilled to secure a new prospect with a backstory to promote in the future.

“I want to thank my BoxingStar management and promoter Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing USA for this opportunity,” Majidov said upon signing Hearn.

“I would like everyone to know not to be fooled by my age. I will bring entertainment with my style,” she added.

Hearn stated: “Mahammadrasul is a fantastic addition to the professional game. The heavyweight scene is brighter than ever right now.

“If Magomedrasul can translate his amateur success into the paid ranks, he can become a force. I’m sure he’ll want to move fast, but we’ll handle his run properly.

“We’ll be looking to get him in line for some big fights.”

Anthony Joshua

One of those “big fights” Hearn talked about would have been against Joshua. He would have given two-time world champion AJ a chance to avenge one of his losses.

Joshua was beaten by the tiniest margin against Majidov earlier. He was knocked out of the 2011 World Amateur Championship heavyweight final by one point.

Adding two more golds in 2013 and 2017, Majidov can lay claim to being one of the most successful amateur heavyweights in recent memory.

Joshua got the last laugh at his time in a vest winning gold at London 2012. But the opposite will still bother the Englishman.

Hearn bringing Majidov into his stable would only increase the need for revenge. However, everything went wrong after a third victory.

Majidov

Majidov fought Andrey Fedosov in April 2021 and was stopped in 84 seconds. He hasn’t fought professionally since.

It seems to be all he wrote for his paid career due to a nasty ankle injury he sustained falling from a fall.

As soon as the ink on the Matchroom deal dried, Majidov’s fate was sealed in three fights. Any idea of confronting Joshua went out the window.

By now, Majidov should have been rated in the Top 15. But after just four fights, the amateur star’s boxing career fades.

Hopefully, he can fully recover from the ailment and stoppage to return in the future.
