Russell Mora Will Referee Canelo Alvarez Title Bout Again

Russell Mora will referee Canelo Álvarez’s title fight again

For the fourth consecutive time in Nevada, veteran referee Russell Mora will officiate Canelo Álvarez’s title defense. This time, when he meets Gennadiy Golovkin in their trilogy of fights for undisputed super middleweight crowns on Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena on the Las Vegas Strip.

Mora recently officiated in May’s Canelo Alvarez-Dimitry Bivol battle for the Russian’s WBA light heavyweight title. And, Bivol won in impressive fashion (above) in a 12-round decision to retain his title and hand Alvarez his second career loss.

Late last year, Mora stopped Alvarez’s win over Caleb Plant in November in the 11th round when Canelo overwhelmed him with a barrage of punches, handing the future hall of famer all four super middleweight belts.

As we’ve written before, Mora’s title experience extends beyond his Canelo fights. Mora, 62, of New Mexico, stopped the WBC Tyson Fury-Deontay Wilder heavyweight title bout after the challenger from Alabama was dropped face-first in the 11th round on Oct. 9 of last year.

Previously, Mora was also the third man in the ring in Yordenis Ugas’ upset decision victory over Manny Pacquiao for the WBA welterweight world title in Las Vegas last August. He also worked Teofimo Lopez’s unanimous decision victory over Vasiliy Lomachenko for the undisputed lightweight title in October 2020.

Mora also worked a previous Canelo fight before the Plant fight, and that was his 11th-round knockout of Sergey Kovalev in November 2019 for the WBO Light Heavyweight Championship. Mora moved in to dismiss the fight after Canelo landed a booming right hand that dropped the Russian.

In addition, the Nevada Athletic Commission named veteran championship judges Dave Moretti of Nevada and Steve Weisfeld of New Jersey. Both have already been involved in several of Canelo’s previous fights and this includes them scoring for Bivol in his May victory over Alvarez.

Both also worked the second Canelo-GGG fight in September 2018. Both gave Alvarez their controversial tight cards that night in his split decision win.

The third judge will be David Sutherland, from Oklahoma, and it will be his first time working on a fight between the legendary fighters.
