Virgil van Dijk on his ‘opportunity to achieve great things’ as captain

Virgil van Dijk will enjoy the break our postponed game with Chelsea has given him, but it won’t be long before he’s back in the thick of things, as captain of his country.

Speaking to the Dutch national team website (onsoranje.nl), our number 4 said: “Every time I put on the jersey, I see it as an opportunity to achieve great things.

“Not just for me and the team, but especially for my country. It’s still special to be able to do that as a captain.”

The 31-year-old will be aware that this may very well be his last chance to represent his country at a World Cup, so the honor of being able to do so as captain will be enormous.

There is a lot of pressure on the ex-Southampton man’s shoulders, whether it be from Jurgen Klopp at club level or from Louis van Gaal and his country, and as he is the captain, a lot of people will be looking at him.

This campaign has been far from the best for our central midfielder, but he hopes that some solid performances before he travels to Qatar in November will be enough to ensure he can claim the silver medal in what is sure to be a memorable campaign.

Anyone can win a World Cup and the defender will dream of lifting that famous trophy in December, but there is a lot of football to be played before he can even think about it.

Hopefully a smooth international break will lead to a winning streak for the Reds, before our winter break.
