Despite Jurgen Klopp’s claim that Caoimhin Kelleher was injured on international duty earlier this year, Ireland manager Stephen Kenny continues to insist they were not aware of any issues for the Liverpool goalkeeper.
Kelleher was photographed training on the first day of pre-season with Liverpool but has been unavailable since due to a groin problem.
Klopp insists the injury occurred while the Irishman was on international duty at the end of last season, and Kenny has refuted those claims in recent weeks.
Earlier this month, Klopp said that Kelleher was about to return to full training, but has yet to be photographed working alongside his teammates, and is not yet included in a squad for this season’s matchday. you may have suffered a setback.
However, Kelleher was photographed on the pitch with his gloves on at the AXA Training Center earlier this week, which would suggest that he is now back in light training and closing in on a comeback, something that Kenny himself confirmed earlier. This week.
Speaking ahead of Ireland’s latest international camp, which Kelleher is not set to take part in, Kenny further explained that his staff have no record of an injury to Liverpool’s goalkeeper in the game he played against Ukraine in June.
“Dr. Alyn Byrne, this is your last match, you have a reputation of appearing in 200 international matches,” Kenny told reporters.
“They always write medical notes on every injury, extensive medical notes. We have no medical notes on Caoimhin from the last camp.
“If he changed something, we didn’t notice. He played the game well, he played the game terribly well, we’ll all move on.
“It’s one of those things, obviously he got injured in training when he came back and it’s unlucky. I think he’s almost back and he’s making good progress.”
Kenny wanted to point out that there was no problem between the two sides, adding that although he had not spoken directly with Klopp, the medical teams had been in constant dialogue.
“I’m sure we’re fine. I’m sure there’s no dissonance there, for sure. We have great respect for Liverpool, I’m sure there’s no problem.”
With Kelleher pictured on the pitch at AXA this week, the hope is that he will soon be able to return to full training, with a view to being involved with the team when the players come together ahead of a busy October schedule.
