International manager hits back at Jurgen Klopp’s claims over injury

Republic of Ireland manager Stephen Kenny has hit back at Jurgen Klopp for his claims about Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher being injured.

Kelleher is not yet part of this year’s matchday squad for the Reds due to the injury, which Klopp insists occurred while he was on international duty over the summer.

The Liverpool boss has spoken out on the subject on a number of occasions, stating last month via the Irish Independent:

“Caoimhin felt something after the international match and everyone, the medical department there, told him that he was fine and he would be fine after the holidays,” Klopp said.

The Liverpool boss also said at a later date: “Caoimh, I heard the Irish manager didn’t like it. [Klopp’s previous comments]or however you gave him the information.

“However, for us it is like this: he was injured in Ireland and the person in charge at the time did not pick him up.

How has the Ireland coach responded?

This little war of words has now developed further, with Ireland manager Stephen Kenny continuing to laugh at Klopp’s claims.

Speaking about his latest international team, Kenny stated on the subject of Kelleher via 90min:

“[Dr Alyn Byrne, team doctor] has the reputation of participating in 200 international matches. They have medical notes, extensive notes, on every injury and we don’t have any notes on Caoimhin from that camp,” Kenny said. “They write everything down and there are no medical notes, so it’s interesting.

“If Caoimhin changed something, we didn’t notice. He trained with Liverpool when he came back for pre-season and got injured”.

As this back and forth dragged on for months, Kenny also did his best to defuse tensions between himself and Klopp.

“We’re fine,” said the Ireland boss.

“We have great respect for Liverpool. I’m sure it’s not a problem and we’ll all move on.”
