Katie Taylor Will Headline Oct. 29th Card at London’s Wembley Arena, Says Hearn

Katie Taylor is not going to rest on her laurels.

The undisputed women’s lightweight champion will return to the ring in the main event of a card scheduled for October 29 at Wembley Arena in London, according to her promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing. Ireland’s Taylor is coming off the best victory of her career in April, a gutsy decision over multiple weight champion Amanda Serrano at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Her entertaining 10-round bout rocked the boxing world and she was seen as a beacon of the boom in women’s boxing.

Naturally, it was assumed that Taylor and Serrano would next meet in a rematch, but talks quickly fell apart between Hearn and Taylor’s business partner, Jake Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions. Serrano (42-2-1, 30 KOs) is scheduled to face Sarah Mahfoud in a featherweight unification bout on the Joe Joyce-Joseph Parker heavyweight fight card on September 24 at the Manchester Arena in Manchester. , England.

Hearn said that Taylor will take on one of his terms for his next fight.

“We’re going to make an announcement, I think, on Friday about our show: On October 29, Katie Taylor is coming back,” Hearn said on The MMA Hour. “Watch this space. She has a number of mandates to attend to.

Hearn hinted that he hopes Taylor’s subsequent fight will be either a rematch with Serrano or a fight with MMA champion Cris Cyborg. It was reported earlier this summer that Cyborg and Taylor were in talks for a possible match in December. Cyborg is scheduled to box on September 25 in Brazil against Simone Silva, and has said that he hopes to fight a boxing match one more time this year.

“We’re also going to be keeping an eye on Cris Cyborg, who I think has her boxing debut coming up soon,” Hearn said. “She (Cyborg) will not fight her on October 29, but that could be by the end of the year or early next year.

“We are still talking about the Amanda Serrano rematch as well. [with] MVP. The legend will return on October 29 in London… at Wembley Arena.”

Hearn emphasized that Taylor (21-0, 6 KOs) would headline the Oct. 29 card.

“Yes, she will be headlining,” Hearn said. “It’s actually her Wembley Arena debut.”

(Note: Taylor fought at Wembley Arena twice before: He made his pro debut in 2016 at the venue; and she defended her undisputed lightweight championship from her in a November 2020 victory over Miriam Gutierrez).

Hearn, however, didn’t say anything about Taylor’s choice of opponent.

“We will announce him in due course,” Hearn said, adding that he would be a “mandatory challenger.”
