Scholes on Sancho’s best position

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has insisted that Jadon Sancho looks better in a more central role as he is not quick enough to be a winger.

It hasn’t quite happened to Sancho since he joined Man Utd from Borussia Dortmund last summer, but it looks like new manager Erik ten Hag is starting to make use of his qualities closer to Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer first brought the England international to United, but he suffered a very disappointing first season at Old Trafford, although he was, of course, far from the only one.

Sancho started in a more central role against Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League on Thursday night, and was once again at his best with a fine display and a well-taken opening goal.

Speaking about Sancho’s qualities, former Red Devils midfielder Scholes made it clear that he thinks the 22-year-old sees himself more as a central player than a winger.

“It’s better when he gets on the pitch, when he connects with the players,” Scholes told BT Sport, quoted by Metro.

“He doesn’t have that electrifying pace to pass somebody on the outside or inside.

“When I was good at Dortmund, I had [Erling] Haaland to bond with, [Achraf] Hakimi always had someone to bond with.

“If he can do that with Manchester United, if he can find Fernandes and Eriksen, really smart players to link up with, he could be a good player for United.”
