Jake Paul on Tank-Garcia: I’m Rooting For Garcia, It’s a 50-50 Fight

Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and all the other highly celebrated platforms have been used by Ryan Garcia in an effort to build his name and punish his longtime rival, Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis.

Following his recent in-ring triumph, a sixth-round demolition job over Javier Fortuna, Garcia pontificated on the possibility of facing Davis in his next outing. As the two try to negotiate the terms of a workable matchup, Jake Paul has weighed in on whose side he’ll be on fight night.

“I’m rooting for Ryan in that fight,” Paul told a group of reporters. “It’s going to be a tough fight, I think it’s a 50/50 fight.”

Paul, unsurprisingly, has always gone back and forth with Davis in the public eye. While the Baltimore native is widely praised for his drawing power and cataclysmic displays in the ring, Paul isn’t impressed with the rest of his game overall. In one of his most recent performances, Davis (27-0, 25 KOs) boldly moved up a division to face Mario Barrios in June 2021.

The San Antonio native fought a calculated fight, keeping Davis at bay with his four-inch reach advantage. Still, even with the powerful southpaw finally closing the distance and stopping his man in the eleventh round, Paul reveals that if Barrios had been just a little more durable, he would have won his fight, at least on his scorecards.

“Gervonta hasn’t really shown the ability to win many rounds. Even with Barrios, he was losing a lot of those rounds on my scorecards. Obviously, he’s in the Mayweather protection program, so a lot of the judges are probably being paid to score for Gervonta, but in my opinion, Barrios was winning those rounds before he was fired.”

Regardless of Paul’s scorecards, all three judges who scored from ringside had Davis ahead by a sizable margin.

Since violently stripping Barrios of his WBA “Regular” 140-pound title, Davis has posted a unanimous decision victory over Isaac Cruz. And, most recently, a sixth-round knockout victory over Rolando Romero.

Though nothing is set in stone as of yet, Paul remains convinced that if Garcia can just stay away from the truculent Davis and his supernatural power, then he’ll be fine in his proposed matchup.

“If Ryan just can’t get hit with those big punches, then I think he can do it.”
