Henry on the ‘important’ Liverpool player that people don’t ‘talk a lot’ about

Liverpool have a star-studded squad so some players may slip under the radar and Thierry Henry has tagged a man he thinks doesn’t get the credit he deserves at Anfield.

Speaking on CBS Sport (via Liverpool Echo): “I’m happy for Matip. This is a guy that people won’t talk much about when mentioning Liverpool.

“You are going to mention Van Dijk, Salah, Mane in the past or Firmino.

“But Joel always comes in and gets the job done. He often scores important goals actually. Headers.

“Bad luck in some situations, but when he scores, they are good and important.”

It’s easy to single out Joel Matip’s role after scoring a late goal, in the Kop end and on a Champions night, but there’s no doubting his importance to our team.

Considering our 32 came to the club for free, he has proven to be a fantastic signing for the Reds.

After spending six years on Merseyside, the former Schalke man has struggled with injuries but has otherwise been a consistent player for Jurgen Klopp.

There are few in world football who can get the ball out of defense like the former Cameroon international, with his dribbling skills unlocking countless defenses.

It is also their performances alongside Virgil van Dijk that make them the most consistent central defensive duo we have had in recent years.

Add to all this that he is also such a lovable character that few could argue with the Arsenal legend’s comments, aside from perhaps saying that he has scored a lot of important goals.
