Panel: What happens when Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez and Gennady Golovkin meet for a third time this weekend?

This week’s panelists were asked to pick a winner in Saturday’s trilogy fight between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin.

Wayne McCullough (former WBC Bantamweight Champion)

I think the third fight between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin will go all the way. GGG didn’t look that good in his last fight, although he got the win, and Canelo of course was upset in his last fight. Both have shown signs of aging. Canelo should have enough to get past GGG, but GGG will always be in the fight and the rounds will be close. I take Canelo by decision.

Michael Conlan (Featherweight Contender)

I see another victory for Canelo, and more comfortable than last time. The first two fights were short and tuck; I had GGG win the first and draw the second. But now, with GGG’s age, as well as how active and dominant Canelo has been, I think Canelo wins hands down on the scorecards.

Wayne Alexander (former European Super Welterweight Champion)

I can see it will be another close and exciting competition because the styles of these two fighters are made for each other. I think both are probably past their peak years, although Golovkin more so than Alvarez. I see GGG getting off to a good start and then Canelo taking over in the middle rounds to win a close but unanimous points decision.

Ryan Walsh (former British featherweight champion)

The unthinkable will happen with the formidable Kazakh finally succumbing to Father Time. Unfortunately, there have been signs in GGG’s recent fights, especially against Sergiy Derevyanchenko. I’m going for Canelo to win by KO in the last installment of a great trilogy. It’s currently 1-1 on my card, so this will be a fitting ending.
