Liverpool kicked off their Champions League campaign after Joel Matip scored a decisive goal in the final match against Ajax on Wednesday.
Matip was one of four players brought into the squad following the loss to Napoli last week, and was one of Liverpool’s standout players throughout.
His goal came when he headed in from a late corner, and replays showed his effort had crossed the line before Ajax could clear.
It’s a big win for the Reds, who desperately needed a positive result after a humiliating night in Napoli last week.
Thiago was also excellent, but it is Matip who rightly receives the applause.

Yes! Finally, one of those many set-piece opportunities pays dividends.

That’s one side of #LFC that I recognize.
Right attitude, much better form, intensity in abundance and grafted until they got the winner. There’s still a lot to work on, but I thought Tsimikas and Fabinho were outstanding, Diaz tireless and the CBs dominant.

A much needed win after a really tough couple of weeks. Thiago and Matip made a big difference. Great to have Jota back too. Darwin is interesting, there are certainly glimpses of how dangerous it can be, but the team is still working out how and when to use it.

A well deserved winner. Liverpool miles better than it has been in a long time. Pressure, creativity, intensity. As key as Thiago is, Jota was also fundamental. Excellent matip and so key to the build. Tsimikas phenomenal. Diaz never, he never stopped running. A great victory.

Well that felt a lot better, a lot more fight and intensity. Matip, Tsimikas and Thiago improved us enormously.
Sometimes when you’re in a rut you need to get some results, hopefully that’s the catalyst now.

In the end! 9 chances created between the two full-backs and finally we assert one of those headers from set pieces.

Four minutes added. Liverpool win 2-1 thanks to a BULLET header from 2023 Ballon d’Or winner Job Joel Andre Matip

Joel??

So a good way for Liverpool to go into a 17-day break without a game.
And it stands to reason that Matip, who had a real impact on Liverpool’s overall performance tonight, was the man to score the winning goal.
Up the reds!
