Paul Merson believes hiring Erik ten Hag was a mistake – Man United News And Transfer News

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson believes Manchester United made a mistake by not signing Graham Potter instead of Erik ten Hag.

As reported in the Daily Star, Merson feels United missed a trick by not appointing the former Brighton boss, who has just taken the reins at Chelsea.

“I have said before that Manchester United should have put him ahead of Erik ten Hag and I stand by that statement.” he said.

Former Arsenal star Merson believes the Blues have done a great deal by hiring Potter as their next manager, following the sacking of Thomas Tuchel last week.

Merson feels the English manager has shown he can take on the best teams and managers in the country and looks forward to seeing how he does at Stamford Bridge.

“Graham Potter is a manager that I really like. He has shown in his time with Swansea City and Brighton that he is more than capable of creating teams that can go toe to toe with the best in the business. It will be interesting to see how it turns out.”

Ironically, it was Graham Potter who handed Ten Hag his first defeat as United manager when United met Brighton on the opening weekend.

Brighton had produced a brilliant display to beat United 2-1 at Old Trafford.

Since then, United have slowly picked up momentum and are now riding a four-game winning streak in the league.

Ten Hag’s imprint is also starting to show, as his side have beaten Liverpool and Arsenal in the process.

United had the chance to sign Potter after firing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer midway through last season.

Although Potter has produced some fine work at Brighton, United appointed Ten Hag as their man, after caretaker manager Ralf Rangnick guided them to the end of the season.

Ten Hag’s exciting style and impressive performances on the European stage have seen his reputation grow and he was one of the most sought after coaches on the continent.

Both Chelsea and United are likely to fight for the same goals in the coming seasons and time will tell who emerges victorious.

However, United should not regret signing the Dutchman as confidence is building at Old Trafford.
