Carragher says ‘amazing’ Firmino has been in decline for two years

Jamie Carragher has made it clear that Liverpool should not continue with Bobby Firmino as the Brazilian has been “on the decline for two years”.

The former Hoffenheim hitman has arguably been one of the Reds’ best players this term, most notably contributing five goals in a 9-0 thrashing of Bournemouth.

“He has been an incredible player for Liverpool, he will surely be remembered as one of the main reasons for Liverpool’s success under Klopp,” Scouser wrote for the Daily Telegraph (via Sportbible).

“But he has been on the decline for two years, his role gradually evolved to the point where last year he was the backup for Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane.

“Now it seems to be the first choice as the false nine again.

“That can’t be right, even if it has performed well in some of the games so far.”

Still, overall, it’s hard to disagree with the Monday Night Football striker’s assessment given that he saw himself behind Diogo Jota and eventually Sadio Mane (after a positional adjustment) in the pecking order. .

A suspension to Darwin Núñez and another injury to Diogo Jota ensured that Firmino would get a chance to shine again in a Jurgen Klopp side and it is possible that he could start again for us in the next meeting with Ajax.

Of course, as far as we’re concerned here at EOTK, that pretty much depends on the German tactician opting for a change of formation that allows the No.9 to connect the play inside a 4-2-3-1.

He is a possible solution to our current crisis in midfield that would, in theory, make the most of our striker options, although it remains to be seen whether the manager will make the move with a setup only seen at Everton this term.
