Haney Throws Down The Gauntlet, Calls Out Gervonta Davis: “If He Wants The Fight, He Can Have The Fight”

A sly smile appears on Devin Haney’s face every time Gervonta Davis’s name is mentioned.

For years, the two have glared back and forth in public view, with Davis usually ending their conversations with verbal threats. However, Haney, despite indulging in her constant trash talk, finds her verbal tirades a bit strange.

If Davis truly believes he would render the reigning undisputed lightweight champion unconscious, a matchup between the two would already have materialized, according to Haney.

“The fight has been built up for years,” Haney said during an interview with Thaboxingvoice. “At the end of the day, if he wants the fight, he can have the fight.”

Davis, 27, was recently seen sitting ringside, watching as Andy Ruiz Jr. scored a unanimous decision victory over Luis Ortiz. In the co-feature, Isaac Cruz issued his own challenge to Davis.

For the Mexican product, a rematch of their December 2021 showdown is what he craves above all else. But in any case, the hard-hitting southpaw has yet to make an official decision about his future. Haney, on the other hand, apparently has a packed schedule.

First up for the newly crowned undisputed champion is an immediate rematch against George Kambosos Jr. If their second matchup mirrors their first encounter, Haney (28-0, 15 KOs) could find himself testing his in-ring IQ against Vasiliy Lomachenko, provided he , of course, emerges victorious against Jamaine Ortiz on October 29.

Yet despite a long list of title contenders, Haney is convinced that with a phone call to Gilberto Mendoza, WBA president Davis (27-0, 25 KOs) can jump to the front of the queue.

“He’s the fake WBA champion,” Haney continued. “He has the Mickey Mouse belt. If he wanted to become my agent, he can become my agent. All he has to do is punch Gilberto and say ‘hey, we want this fight to happen’ and he can become the boss whenever he wants.”

Davis, who currently holds the WBA “Regular” lightweight title, has proudly defended his strap three times, most recently against Rolando Romero. Still, Haney seems unimpressed with the Baltimore native’s secondary trinket.

By all accounts, while focusing on the challenge Kambosos presents on October 16, Haney reveals that he would be more than willing to cut a deal behind the scenes with Davis: quick, quick, and in a hurry.

“I mean, it all starts with George and how it develops. But obviously, if it makes sense, then that’s the much bigger fight, then that’s the fight we would really focus on. But right now, George is the guy and we can’t look past him.”
