Warren: Fury-Joshua Discussions On Hold Out of Respect For Queen Elizabeth II

Frank Warren, co-promoter of WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, says negotiations for a fight with Anthony Joshua have been put on hold “out of respect” for the recent passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

Queen Elizabeth II passed away last Thursday. That afternoon, the UK began an official period of mourning. Most sporting events have been postponed, including the O2 Arena card featuring Claressa Shields against Savannah Marshall, which was scheduled for last Saturday.

Fury recently approached Joshua with an offer of a 60-40 money split for a year-end showdown in the UK.

Joshua agreed to the terms, but many details remain to be worked out.

Your discussions will resume once the dueling period is over.

“We’ve put everything on hold at the moment. Obviously it wasn’t appropriate. That’s how we feel,” Warren told Talk Sport.

“We’ve put it on hold and we’ll pick it up in the next week or so. From our perspective, we don’t think it’s appropriate out of respect for what happened.”

Joshua is looking to renew his career after suffering back-to-back twelve-round decision losses at the hands of Oleksandr Usyk, who holds the IBF, IBO, WBA and WBO heavyweight titles. The second of those two fights took place last month in Saudi Arabia.

Fury sprang into action in April, when he fulfilled a mandatory obligation by knocking out rival Dillian Whyte before a crowd of 94,000 at Wembley Stadium.
