Liverpool vs. Ajax to go ahead as planned after club ‘confirmation’ – Liverpool FC

Amid concerns about a second match being postponed following Queen’s death, the Champions League tie between Liverpool and Ajax will go ahead as planned.

The Reds’ Premier League clash with Wolves on September 10 was postponed as a show of respect for the late monarch, who passed away on Thursday.

It was a divisive decision, with games at all levels in the UK canceled over the weekend, and raised further concerns about meetings with Ajax (Tuesday) and Chelsea (next Sunday).

This was magnified after the decision to delay Rangers vs. Napoli elsewhere in Group A from Tuesday to Wednesday due to a police shortage in Scotland.

But after consultation with UEFA, it has indeed been confirmed that the second match of the Champions League group stage will go ahead as originally planned.

Liverpool provided an update via their official Twitter page on Sunday night, announcing that the tie would take place on Tuesday 13th September and kick off at 8pm.

Privately, the club was never in doubt that the match would remain the same, although a statement explaining the situation to supporters planning to travel, including Ajax fans, would certainly be welcome.

Alfred Schreuder and his team will visit Anfield as usual, then, with Ajax and Liverpool taking first and third place respectively in Group A after their opening meetings.

The Dutch outfit sealed a 4-0 victory over Rangers to kick off their European campaign, while Liverpool suffered a humiliating 4-1 loss to Napoli on Wednesday night.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have been given more time to prepare for this clash after the postponement of their meeting with Wolves, which the manager hopes will give them an advantage.

Liverpool’s pre-match press conference, which will be attended by Klopp and a player, is scheduled for 1pm on Monday, with training to follow around 4:15pm.

It is not yet clear if the trip to Chelsea will be kept on September 18 and the Queen’s funeral will take place in London the following day.
