Shields-Marshall, Mayer-Baumgardner Show Postponed Due To Queen Elizabeth II’s Passing

Saturday’s historic women’s card at London’s O2 Arena was postponed following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. The entire poster has been provisionally moved to October 15 in the same venue.

The move comes after all football matches in England, Scotland and Wales for the weekend were postponed.

Saturday’s show was to have been headlined by the undisputed middleweight world title fight between Claressa Shields and Savannah Marshall, with the unified super featherweight title fight between Mikaela Mayer and Alycia Baumgardner also on the same card.

It was initially announced that the weigh-in would take place on Friday behind closed doors, but was later pushed back to 3 p.m. before being cancelled.

“With respect to the country, I understand that the death of the Queen of the country has a mourning of the entire country,” Shields said on Twitter. “The government is speaking and those in higher power. Whatever the decision, I respect it.”

Bumgardner messaged Mayer on Twitter when the news broke, stating that Mayer was struggling to make the super featherweight limit.

“Your ass scream was postponed!” she wrote. “Have fun gaining weight again.”

News of the Queen’s deteriorating health broke during Thursday’s press conference, and her death was confirmed just hours later.

Ben Shalom, CEO of main promoter BOXXER, said: “This is an unprecedented time in our history and our sincere thoughts are primarily with the Royal Family and the nation at this time. Out of respect, the British Boxing Board of Control has decided to postpone Saturday’s show.

“All parties are working on a tentative date of Saturday 15th October at The O2 to stage this unique and iconic night of celebrating women’s sport at a more appropriate time.”

Adam Smith, Head of Boxing Development at Sky Sports, added: “All of our thoughts at Sky Sports Boxing are with the Royal Family at this time.

“As much as we all looked forward to witnessing this historic sporting spectacle this weekend, it is absolutely right to respectfully reschedule the spectacle for October 15.”

Robert Smith, secretary general of the British Boxing Board of Control, announced that all UK shows would be postponed this weekend.

The statement read: “The British Boxing Board of Control has decided that all tournaments this weekend will be postponed as a show of respect to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. We join as a nation in mourning and paying tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, honoring her dedication to our country during her long reign and the legacy of hers that she leaves.”
