Venezuelan Gabriel Maestre will battle American Mykal Fox for the WBA interim welterweight title on August 7 after it was revealed that Cody Crowley tested positive for Covid-19.
Originally the Canadian Crowley wanted to fight Maestre for the vacant belt, but after his impossibility, a new opponent was admitted to the main fight of the TBG Promotions and Premier Boxing Champions in Armory, Minneapolis.
Maestre was one of the welterweight favorites for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics but chose not to participate when the chance for the black and gold belt presented itself in the US. The 34-year-old fighter has only three professional fights under his belt but has faced experienced opponents like Diego Chaves and Jeovanis Barraza, both of whom he knocked out despite his record.
Fox arrives as Crowley’s replacement, but with a lot of motivation for the opportunity. He has a number of interesting characteristics, most notably his size, being 1.92 meters tall and 13 centimeters taller than Maestre (1.79 m). He is 25 years old, 9 years younger than Maestre, and is a southpaw who understands distance work and has a very interesting technique.
Fox has been training and waiting for an opportunity all these months, and the one he was waiting for has come. Maestre, on the other hand, has already traveled to the US to complete the final details of his preparation and to face this great battle.
The Venezuelan has three KOs in the same number of fights and Fox has 22 wins, 2 losses, and 2 KOs in his record.
