Premier League games cancelled following The Queen’s death

Buckingham Palace has confirmed that Her Majesty the Queen has died on Thursday and, as a result, this weekend’s football matches have been cancelled.

“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral tonight and return to London tomorrow,” Buckingham Palace said in its statement.

The Queen will receive a full state funeral, as is traditional to commemorate the death of a monarch, as the nation now enters an official 12-day period of mourning.

Following his death, it was confirmed that all political, sporting, and comedy events were canceled for the foreseeable future.

This includes games from the Premier League, EFL, SPL and the Irish and Welsh leagues, which are also expected to be played at semi-professional and amateur sporting events.

Following the death of Princess Diana on Sunday 31 August 1997, the Premier League match between Liverpool and Newcastle United scheduled for the same day was postponed.

The following weekend’s Football League games have also been moved to avoid coinciding with Diana’s funeral, which is also a possibility this time.

It’s unclear when the sport will return after this tragic news, but for now, everything for the foreseeable future is off.
