Chelsea sack Tuchel, eye Pochettino or Potter as new boss

Chelsea sack Tuchel

Chelsea sacked head coach Thomas Tuchel. Wednesday’s announcement shocked many on social media. In his time at Stamford Bridge, the German brought important trophies to the club.

The decision to sack Tuchel comes just a day after the Blues floundered in the opening match of the Champions League. Chelsea traveled to face Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday and failed to score against the Croatian club.

Coupled with the disappointing night in Zagreb, the Blues got off to a slow start in the Premier League this season. Tuchel managed just three wins from the first six league games. It is not necessarily the fact that Chelsea did not live up to their lofty standards that dealt the final blow.

Chelsea spent more than any other club in Europe in the summer of 2022. Gross spending in 2022 reached $310m, with the club only reaching $65m in player sales to meet those fees.

Chelsea sack Thomas Tuchel

“On behalf of everyone at Chelsea FC, the Club would like to place on record its thanks to Thomas and his staff for all their efforts during his time with the Club,” an official statement read. “Thomas will rightly have a place in Chelsea history after winning the Champions League, Super Cup and Club World Cup in his time here.”

“As the new ownership group reaches 100 days since taking over the Club, and as they continue their hard work to move the club forward, the new owners believe the time is right to make this transition.”

Now new owner Todd Boehly must find a replacement for Thomas Tuchel. The first candidates have a relatively successful experience in the Premier League. For example, former Tottenham Hotspur and PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino is a name in the mix. The same goes for Brighton and Hove Albion manager Graham Potter, who will travel to London on Wednesday to meet with the club.

Pochettino is currently without a club after he was also sacked earlier this summer. Potter, on the other hand, is still on the south coast with Brighton. The Seagulls have already given Chelsea permission to speak to their head coach. Potter, however, has a release clause in his current contract with Brighton.

Chelsea’s next game is a Premier League match with Fulham on Saturday.
