Achterberg charged for ‘insulting gestures’ following Liverpool’s late win

The Liverpool and Newcastle benches collided as Fabio Carvalho scored a late winner during our recent Premier League encounter and now there have been repercussions for both clubs.

As reported by BBC Sport: ‘Liverpool manager John Achterberg and Newcastle’s Daniel Hodges were charged by the Football Association after an incident during the Reds’ 2-1 win on 31 August .

‘The couple have been accused of inappropriate behaviour. Achterberg, Liverpool’s goalkeeping coach, is also alleged to have used abusive and/or insulting gestures.”

Both men have until September 8 to respond to the decision that has been made and it is not yet known if we will appeal the charges.

Post-goal footage showed that the Geordies had thrown bottles at our staff, following the exciting reactions that followed the winning goal.

Our goalkeeping coach is one of the most senior members of Jurgen Klopp’s coaching team and this isn’t necessarily something we’ve seen him do before.

The club are likely to take this decision with their chin, although we may have been disappointed to see less repercussions for the actions on the away bench.

However, regardless of all of this, it’s nice to be able to draw a line under the entire event and move on.

We’ve been famous for fair play in recent years, but this clash and Darwin Núñez’s red card could quickly tarnish a good reputation.
