Chelsea Transfer News: Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has rejected the Blues’ first contract renewal offer.
After overcoming the early stages of his career, Mendy helped Reims to promotion to Ligue 1. The custodian made his Ligue 1 with Reims and kept fourteen clean sheets in his first season.
Mendy then joined Ligue 1 club Rennes. The goalkeeper showed off his brilliant form and helped Rennes finish third in Ligue 1.
Meanwhile, Chelsea were struggling with goalkeeper issues as their big money signing Kepa Arrizabalaga was having a very poor run. The Blues bolstered their goalkeeping position by tying up Mendy. Since he joined the club, Mendy became Chelsea’s number one. He was brilliant for Chelsea when Thomas Tuchel’s team won the Champions League. The Senegalese international won the UEFA and FIFA Goalkeeper of the Year awards.
Chelsea Transfer News: Chelsea offered Mendy lower wages than understudy Kepa
According to the English media, Mirror Senegalese International Eduoard Mendy has rejected Chelsea’s first contract renewal offer.
Even after his exploits with the gloves, the Chelsea custodian is one of the lowest earners at the club. With Mendy’s current contract due to expire in 2025, Chelsea now want to secure the custodian on a longer deal.
Hence, they made an offer to Mendy for the renewal of his contract. However, Mendy’s camp felt Chelsea’s offer was too low and it was rejected.
According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea’s initial offer for Mendy was even lower than what his deputy Kepa earns (£190,000 a week) at the club.
Chelsea have recently tied up one of their best assets, Reece James, with a very big contract. Considering Mendy’s contributions to the club, surely Chelsea will have to pay more than what they offer now.
However, recently Mendy has come under fire for his poor form and was in the midst of a controversial decision in his last match.
Tuchel’s confidence in Mendy
However, Chelsea manager Tuchel showed his confidence in his number one, saying: “Someone sent me an interesting quote about Napoleon, who asked his generals that they should not only have the best quality but also be lucky generals. That is also what you need from the managers and the goalkeepers, and that they have a kind of impetus in which if they make a small mistake they do not sanction it.
Meanwhile, Chelsea’s second-choice goalkeeper Kepa came close to leaving Stamford Bridge this season. He was heavily linked with Napoli. However, the deal never materialized.
Addressing this, the Chelsea manager has expressed that Kepa, but did not receive any satisfactory offer from any other club and that the German always wanted him to stay as blue.

The Blues have had a topsy-turvy start to the English Premier League campaign. They recorded a narrow win in their previous match against West Ham. Chelsea is currently in sixth place with ten points from six games. They lost their first match against Dinamo Zagreb in the UEFA Champions League.
