By Sam Volz: Trainer Robert Garcia says he believes Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz has the power and aggressive style to take down undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney.
Garcia feels that Haney (28-0, 15 KOs) lacks the punching power to put away a fighter like Pitbull Cruz. While Haney could outbox Cruz (24-2-1, 17 KOs) for three rounds, he would take control at that point.
Cruz stole the show last Sunday night with his second round knockout victory over Eduardo Ramirez on the Andy Ruiz Jr. vs. Luis Ortiz at the Crypto Arena in Los Angeles.
After knocking Ramirez down twice in the second round, the fight was stopped. The crowd cheered loudly for Cruz, who had won them over with his performance.
“People love Pitbull. The fight with Tank, we all think Pitbull pulled it off. Even if he didn’t win, he won the fans. He won that fight. The fans were crazy about Pitbull,” Robert Garcia told 21BoxingTv about Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz’s fight against Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis last December.
“You will have to be a special fighter to beat Pitbull at 135. I don’t think Haney can stop Pitbull because Haney doesn’t have the power to stop him. I think so because I don’t think he can stop it with the power of him,” Garcia said when asked if Pitbull could beat Haney.
“I don’t think I have that crazy power to stop it. Pitbull can beat Haney. Pitbull is like a street fighter. He takes a really good hit, he’s very strong and very aggressive.
The [Pitbull Cruz] He throws punches from everywhere, and it’s going to be hard for Devin Haney to stop him. I don’t think Haney has the power to throw a punch to hurt him. It will be a tough 12 rounds for Haney.
“The [Haney] you can beat him for three rounds, but it’s going to be tough to do it for 12 rounds. You have a little monster like Pitbull; It’s going to be tough. No one could top Mike Tyson in the past, and it’s a similar style. Big power, big chin, and he just keeps coming like a street fighter. It’s going to be hard to beat Pitbull.
“So, I think it’s a fight that’s going to happen. PBC is very smart and they know the first fight worked very well in the gate,” Robert said of a Pitbull-Tank Davis rematch.
“I think they made millions of dollars out of the gate. I think the rematch would do two or three times as much, and the pay-per-view numbers are going to double as well,” Garcia said.
