Leanne Kiernan enjoyed an excellent first season on Merseyside, scoring 13 league goals as the Reds won the FA Women’s Championship and secured promotion to the Barclays Women’s Super League.
It meant the Ireland international equaled the club’s record for league goals in a season, now held by Natasha Dowie.
Liverpool Women manager Matt Beard has said Kiernan will have another important role to play in the coming season.
“It was important for us to extend Leanne’s contract before the last year. Physically she is the best I have seen her and I have been working with her for a long time.
“He has had a good pre-season, he had a great season last year and he offers us versatility in the forward positions as well, he can play on the wings and in the middle.
“His attitude, application and personality are fantastic and he will be an integral part of the team for years to come.”
That pre-season form has seen Kiernan, last season’s Liverpool Women’s Player of the Season, score an early winner against Aston Villa and score a hat-trick against West Ham.
She said: “This is an exciting time for me and my family, and a really exciting time. I think this club is like my home.
“People know that if life is good outside of football, you perform better on the pitch. I really like the people, I really like the place and the girls are great around me. I couldn’t have won any awards without them.
“I’m getting used to Beardy being by my side when I sign a contract, this will be the fifth year I’ve known him! He understands me well and brings out the best in me, so hopefully I can return the favor.”
Kiernan and her teammates will kick off their Women’s Super League campaign away from home in Reading on Sunday ahead of a home game with champions Chelsea and Anfield’s thrilling clash with Everton later in the month.
“I feel like we are going to be tested this year, but we will be ready. We’ve got good characters in the locker room, maturity-wise and just bringing us in as a group, so I’m really looking forward to it.
“It was a very good season last year and I was very happy with myself and with the team. I feel that Liverpool, the people and the place, are very similar to the Irish. Outside of football I have a small community where everyone knows each other, so thanks to the people of Scouse for making me so welcome!
“I really want to get back to the WSL. Last season we had a different task to do and this season will be different, but I am really looking forward to it. The preseason has gone very well both personally and collectively and I feel that we all really want to go”.
