5 World Cup players help Newcastle beat Bournemouth

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe fielded a very strong starting XI for his team’s Carabao Cup clash on Tuesday against Bournemouth. The Magpies faced Premier League side Bournemouth at home in their first competitive match since the World Cup break. Howe had five players in the Qatar tournament and all five started the match on Tuesday.

Bruno Guimaraes, Fabian Schar, Kieran Trippier, Callum Wilson and Nick Pope were at the World Cup this month. The quintet also traveled back to England following their respective teams’ defeats in the tournament. Before the game, Howe spoke to reporters about the possibility of his five World Cup players playing.

“We’ll wait and see,” Howe said. “I spoke to the international guys when they came back. kieran [Tierney] and nick [Pope] they really wanted to play, I think those conversations are important. I will continue those conversations with the other guys.”

Howe’s decision shows ambition

Howe finally made the late call to start the five key players. The Newcastle manager clearly wanted to make a statement to the team and the fans that he wants trophies this season. The bold decision paid off as all five World Cup players played a key role in securing victory on Tuesday.

Newcastle beat Bournemouth 1-0 in the game with Pope making some solid saves in the second half. Central defender Schar helped Pope to a clean sheet on the night and even had a few shots on goal as well. Trippier provided the ball which eventually landed in the back of the net.

The England fullback slotted a fine cross into the box on 67 minutes and Bournemouth defender Adam Smith accidentally headed past his own goalkeeper. Wilson was also very bright, particularly in the first half. The English striker fired three times and even scored, but the goal was disallowed for offside on the play.

However, Brazil’s Guimaraes ran the show from midfield. The silky midfielder led the team in completions and dribbling, while also making three successful tackles.

Newcastle are also hoping to continue their winning ways in the Premier League. They are currently third in the table and are serious contenders for a Champions League spot. The Magpies are attempting to qualify for a top-tier European competition for the first time since 2003.
